Hainan University School of Plant Protection began as the Department of Plant Protection of South China Academy of Tropical Forestry established in 1954, while the discipline of Plant Protection was established in 1959 when China’s natural rubber industry took off. Plant Protection was one of the earliest undergraduate programs of the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture and the former South China Institute of Tropical Crops. After a series of institutional reforms and discipline restructuring, the School of Plant Protection was founded in 1999, as a part of the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture, and the school name changed to the School of Environment and Plant Protection in 2005 and then to a School of Hainan University in 2007 after the merger of the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture and the former Hainan University. The Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Forestry (ITAF) was founded in 2016 as part of Hainan University and the School of Plant Protection was one of the eight schools put under ITAF. Finally, the School got its current name in 2019 after a new round of restructuring of disciplines and schools in Hainan University. As the cradle of tropical phytopathology and tropical entomology in China, the School has the honor of housing many distinguished scientists who have been dedicated to the research of tropical plant pathogens and pest control, such as Lu Dajing (plant pathologist and mycologist) and You Qiwei (entomologist, one of the founders of entomology in china).

The School has three academic departments: The Department of Plant Pathology, the Department of Entomology, and the Department of Pesticides. It is committed to turning its undergraduates into academic leaders, industry captains, and inter-disciplinary professionals. The School has 76 full-time faculty members, and a total of 645 undergraduates and postgraduate students (including international students). The School has a total laboratory space of 5,280m2 with modern equipment worth 48.60 million RMB. In addition, the School has 4 teaching labs and 33,350 m2 fields for teaching and research.

Over 60 years, the School has built up a mature academic system for tropical plant protection. The School is famous for the program in Plant Protection, which is a national and provincial specialty subject; boasts 1 provincial level excellent teaching team for Tropical Crop Pathology; offers 2 provincial selected courses (General Entomology and Tropical Plant Pathology), 1 provincial selected open online course (Tropical Plant Pathology), and 3 university-level selected courses (General Plant Pathology, Tropical Crop Entomology, Plant Chemical Protection, and Agricultural Microbiology); and has published many textbooks including Tropical Crop Plant Pathology, and Entomology. Its Plant Protection discipline was included the first batch of Pilot Programs of the MOA for Education Excellence in Agriculture and Forestry (Excellence and Innovation track) in 2014, and set up the Class of Excellent Agricultural and Forestry Talent (Class of Excellent Talent) since 2015.

In recent years, the faculty has won 10 ministry/provincial-level teaching achievement awards, including first prizes and second prizes; has published more than 30 papers in national core journals, and over 30 textbooks.

Supervisor and Student in the Lab

The School is committed to all-round student development in an active campus atmosphere. It encourages its students to: set up societies including the Association of Plant Protection, the Association of Insect Fans, the UAV Association of Plant Protection, and the Study Club of Foreign and Chinese Culture Classics; organize colorful activities on campus, including club events, science education campaigns, and participation in industry competitions with 1 first prize and 2 third prizes in the “Nanbeitong Cup" National Aviation Model Open (Haikou station) and the Agricultural UAV Mission Competition of Hainan Province Aviation Model Open) . Student entrepreneurship coaching workshops, leadership classes and classes for graduate entrance test coaching have been organized, as well as on-campus professional skill competitions and public speaking competitions. Many students have excelled in competitions and comprehensive evaluations. For example, Tan Xinhang, a student from the 2016 Class of Excellent Talent, was named the Star Model of Self-improvement for University Students in Hainan Province, and the Star Model of Self-improvement for Chinese University Students. The School pays attention to its undergraduates’ research capabilities, and encourages them to publish research findings on high-level journals. Its undergraduates have published 14 papers, including 8 papers in SCI journals, 4 papers in Chinese core journals, and 2 in other journals.

The School has set up extramural bases for teaching, scientific research, and student practice in collaboration with around 30 famous enterprises and research institutes, providing empowering platforms for students to develop their innovative consciousness and practical skills. Our students have won 9 awards at national and provincial competitions like “Internet+” and “Challenge Cup”. In recent years, 90% of our students have found their first job after graduation. More and more students are admitted to graduate schools of famous Chinese universities such as University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhejiang University or go abroad to pursue further study.

Commencement Ceremony

The School plays a constructive role in plant protection and supports the development of "agriculture, rural areas and farmers" with its academic resources. The School has scored dozens of ministerial/provincial-level research achievements to help the prevention and control of plant pathogens, insects and pests which attack rubber trees, tropical fruits, melons and vegetables. With its technological expertise, the School has offered and will continue to offer critical support for local economic crop production and reducing economic losses.

Looking forward, the School of Plant Protection will follow the motto of Hainan University: “All rivers run into sea, and all efforts aim for the highest ideals”, and work to cultivate talent and provide public services by advancing its education quality and increasing its research capacity in the field of tropical plant protection. We will strive to become an advanced teaching and research institution with global influence in the area of plant protection in tropical regions.
