ABOUT HAINAN UNIVERSITY
Hainan University (HNU) was established in August 2007 through the merger of the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture and the original Hainan University. It is a comprehensive key university, jointly constructed by the Ministry of Education and the Hainan Provincial Government. As part of China's “Double First Class” initiative, HNU is also included in the “211 Project” for priority development. The university upholds the motto “All rivers run into the sea, all efforts aim for the highest ideals” and promotes the spirit of "self-improvement, dedication, integrity, and perseverance," striving for excellence and innovative development. On April 13, 2018, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasised the importance of supporting Hainan University in developing world-class disciplines during the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Hainan's establishment as a province and the founding of its Economic Zone. His guidance provided fundamental direction for the university's development. According to the Soft Science rankings of the development speed of Chinese universities, Hainan University ranked 49th in overall growth from 2017 to 2022, with its total growth rate placing fifth among universities nationwide. From 2019 to 2022, the university achieved the highest growth rate in China, marking a period of significant development.
In the context of the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port and International Education Innovation Pilot Zone, Hainan University stays committed to developing leading and distinctive disciplines through integrating the best intellectual resources and furthering opening up and innovation. With a focus on seven key research fields - “FTP Development and Institutional Innovation”, “Ecological Civilization”, “Culture and Tourism”, “One Health”, “Tropical High Efficiency Agriculture”, “Marine Science and Technology”, and “Information Technology”, Hainan University is making every effort to create world-class disciplines under the country’s Double First-Class Initiative and build itself into a first-class university in China.
Hainan University adopts a strategy of openness in education and has established all-round, multi-level and extensive exchanges and cooperation. It is the first institute in Hainan Province that is qualified to receive Chinese Government Scholarships for international students to study in China. It has been selected as the National Demonstration Base for International Students' study in China by the Ministry of Education and the Chinese Language Education Base by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, and has won the honorary title of "Advanced Group of Education for International Students in China" .
